Getting Ready For The New Season

by President Sam Wright, Jr.

Sam Wright, Jr. Pres. of Have Ref Will Travel

Sam Wright, Jr. Pres. of Have Ref Will Travel

Hello to the staff of Have Ref Will travel and my fellow officials:

I trust that you have enjoyed few weeks of rest and relaxation from basketball, as you all know time is drawing near to begin our new season and what does that say to us? It is time to take CENTER STAGE.

This is the time for you to prepare your body and minds for the upcoming season. I know that we have gotten lazy and have not put in the time to prepare our body and mind, but we must remember that God has given us the ability to take center stage and perform at the highest level that represents Him and we can only do that if we are in the best shape and mentally and spiritually prepared to take center stage.

I trust that you will be ready to take center stage and make not only yourself but God proud to be one of his servant; always remember it not all about basketball because God can give and he can take it way, so lets be a good and faithful servant.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17

You Are Now At Center Stage; God Fired Up!

July 15th, 2009 Posted in encouragement | No Comments »

By Samuel Wright, Jr.

Have you ever been refereeing and pulled to the side and asked some question about your game. Have you been hackled called names by a fan? Have you ever made a call that affected the outcome of the game and the fans disagreed with you?  What do you do? Put the ball in play and let the game roll on!

In life we are often at Center Stage. Center Stage the place where all eyes are on you.  The spot light is on you.  The finger pointed at you.  Center Stage the place of proving. Can you stand the heckling, given your best efforts and still been called, “Hey ref that call was an idiot call!”  Are you being misunderstood, taken advantage of, overworked, underpaid, unappreciated etc.? Well welcome to Center Stage!

You can only put the ball back in play and continue the game without anger or an attitude when you realize this is not just about basketball, a job, a marriage, a relationship.  We are in a battle; Good vs. Evil, we must endure the battle but we know God wins, in fact has already won.  Have you taken Him with you on the basketball court, on your job, in your marriage? Are you determined to go on the firing line with your own tool, your own attitude, thinking etc.? I assure you with the spot light turned on you; you cannot hide. Every attitude, temper, emotion within you when the fire is turned up high enough will show or be burned out.  You want to be the best referee you can be, the best husband, father, employee etc?  Then first be the best child of God you can.  Invite the Son so you can become a son. Invite Christ into your life totally. You are now being ‘God fired’ fired up like gold. Proven to see if God can use you.  The curtain has risen.  The clock has sounded and now you walk out…welcome to Center Stage!

Revelation 3:18 “I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”

Mathew 11:28 “Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Reporting from The Great Sey Mountain Shoot Out at Brevard N.C.

Hav Ref Will Travel Crew

Recently the crew of Have Ref Will Travel was invited to the Great Smokey Mountain Shoot Out at Brevard N.C. The following staff members were able to attend, Andrea Orr (EZ), Carlos Matos, Mitch Wilson, Greg James, Nate Middleton and myself, Sam Wright, president, and what a great experience it was.

We as a staff learned a lot about working together and how to handle controversy amongst ourselves. With this I was very proud of our staff to overcome whatever controversy we had and how we went out and did our job as professional and got the job done.

Fellowshipping with our staff I was appreciative of how they handled the attack of women that were coming at them. They gave the respect and courtesy to the women but they did not fall into the luring attack that was aimed at them. When it was time to go we all left together. In my many years of officiating, this is one of the things where I see we as officials fall short on; the occasion of being lured in by women who have no good intentions towards us, its just a one night thing. We as men and officials must learn to recognize that that’s not what we are here for.

Guys I take my hat off to you for handling this situation and bringing our staff more together as a crew. We all learned quite a bit about being members of a quality crew. We were complimented for our hard work, not just by the coaches but also by the fans and staff members of Youth Basketball Organization of America (YBOA) who sponsored this event. They remarked often how our staff went out and did a great job.
I personally want to say thanks to you guys that was able to attend the Great Smokey Mountain Shoot Out and say, “A job well done, keep up the good work and keep developing your skills to make our staff and organization Have Ref Will Travel one of the best refereeing staffs in Florida.
